The
icon is a representation or a picture of a sacred or sanctified Christian
personage painted on the back of a glass or wood support. Painting icons on
glass was spread in Transylvania and Moldavia nearly 350 years ago, but the
first icons were made in the 17th century. The Transylvanian glass
icon painters are known and recognized worldwide for they talent. The glass
painted icons through the shining colors and naïve
drawing has a deep Christianity inside. It was a time when Orthodox and
Catholic Christians venerated the icons and they were showing even honor and
respect for these icons, but in our modern society the icons have mostly only a
decorative purpose. A glass painted icon has a special meaning for a Christian,
but these icons are appreciated by non Christians too.
Leah Olimpia is a talented glass icon painter from Romania; she made more then
200 icons in 10 years. She’s favorite theme is Jesus and Virgin Mary with little
Jesus.
